WHAT GIFTS DOES

GIFTS is an organization originally created by a group of four middle school students, and is now maintained by three 10th grade students. GIFTS aims to 'Give Individuals a Future to Succeed.' We want to give people a better life, but we don't believe that just throwing money at them is the best solution. We hope to give people the tools they need to work themselves out of poverty. It is like the old saying by Lao Tzu that says, "Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime." The work we did with Labor Migration deeply affected us and we learned more about the world and more about Shanghai. Our last project was working with Kiva to give loans to starting entrepreneurs that allow them to start their business that will help them earn money for themselves. To find out more click here. We hope to continue working with KIVA in the future, but for now we want to work on Literacy at SAS.

We are very fortunate to be able to read and write. Why not give others the same opportunity?

Last year our project was to work with promoting literacy both in our own school and in Shanghai. Through our highly successful Read-A-Thon, we were able to raise over 2,000 USD while still getting our elementary schoolers excited about reading! Using this money, we hope to buy books in order to help build a library at the Shanghai Li MIng Migrant School so that the students who normally would not have these resources will now have access to them. Our greatest hope is for this to expand to other schools in Shanghai in the world and for our foundation to grow into something great.
