Aims We are trying to raise awareness about:
1. the issues that migrant workers face
2. how life would be better if they had access to better job opportunities in their own countries (given by Kiva)
Our Message Dirty, dangerous and degrading jobs are what migrant workers are forced to do in order to learn a living. Most people do not know about this issue. By working alongside Kiva, we will be able to provide jobs to citizens in destitute countries to allow them to stay in their home; thus, this process will definitely benefit that country’s economy because they would not need to move out of their country for better opportunities elsewhere.
About GIFTS GIFTS stands for Giving Individuals a Future To Succeed. We raise awareness in our school community about the issues relating labor migration and collect money to support Kiva, an organization the gives loans to starting entrepreneurs. (for more information on that, visit our How Kiva Works page) This is our way of helping people in need. We will collect the money multiple ways. The two main ways that we will collect the money will be through donations and bake sales. Just in donations alone on the one day of the conference when we first had our box out we received more than one thousand RMB. This shows how affective donation boxes are and proves that we can collect money just will a box and asking. We also collected a lot of money from the bake sale at Myg Nyte. According to Ms. Leong, “The middle and high school community is very willing to help their community. We as a school have given to many local organizations such as Shanghai Sunrise, the Li Ming School and the orphanage." We collected about one thousand RMB again from that. This also says that we can collect the money in two ways and both are just as affective as the other. Clearly, collecting the money isn’t that big of an issue, our community is very generous as a whole. The money we collect will be donated to Kiva. This money will be use to help run the organization. As stated on the Kiva website, “Kiva doesn't take a cut out of the money loaned through their site, so their expenses have to be made up through other means” (KivaStore) This means that they have to get their money to run the organization from somewhere else. Even though the money isn’t being lent to an entrepreneur, it is still helping to give jobs to people in need. This is because if Kiva wasn’t there then there would be no loans; therefore if we support Kiva then we are allowing its work to continue. In conclusion, the money will be used for a good cause. GIFTS wants to help the situation of labor migration by keeping people in their countries. If this happens then they won’t have to be treated badly and the home countries won’t suffer. By taking the above steps and supporting Kiva, we are doing this.
