BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Impact of Migrant Workers Around the World

Emily and Jonas

Labor migration has become a huge international issue. Migrant workers live and suffer all around the world. In 2005, there were approximately 191 million migrant workers around the world, including 18 million in North America, 9 million in the Middle East, 12 million in South America, 30 million in Europe, and 7 million in Asia. Out of these migrant workers, 49% are women.

Migrant workers are contributing to unemployment rates. Billions of other migrants are unable to find jobs, which leads to increases in unemployment rates. 46% of the world is unemployed and almost 86,000,000/ 13.8% of young people are unemployed. New jobs are always being created to help; however, the unemployment rate has increased in the U.S. by 26% in the last 10 years.

Immigrants’ home countries are faced with many problems after their experienced and knowledgeable citizens migrate to developed countries. Many of the immigrants who leave their country are considered the more skilled and educated of that country. Once they leave the country, the home /poor and developing country begins to lose their smartest and skilled citizens. This is called issue known as “brain drain”. Eventually, if all the educated and skilled people leave their home country there will not be enough people to teach the other citizens of that country and eventually the society will be unable to function.

International migration is causing issues and problems for the migrant workers, the host country, and the home country. The immigrants who leave their country are in search of hope, success, and a better future. However, they are given dirty, degrading, and dangerous jobs “3D jobs.” The host countries are pressured into creating new jobs. In the end both the host and developing countries are faced with problems. The immigrants’ home country is faced with “brain drain” and the host country is forced to create more jobs, more homes, more food, and more opportunities for the workers. Migration of labor has caused many international concerns and problems. Hopefully, we will be able to work together as a global community to help give migrant workers and immigrants a better life.

Roughly half of the world lives on two dollars a day. This can be solved by working out of poverty. However, to do this, people must find better opportunities in different countries. This causes people with special skills to letocave, which in-turn results in a "brain drain" for the home country. Although there are remittances, money sent over a long distance, wired back to the home country families, it is still not enough to lift the place out of poverty.

LABOR MIGRATION AND DISCRIMINATION
There is a huge amount of discrimination toward these migrant workers. Studies by the ILO show that more than one in three legal immigrant applicants were unfairly excluded in job selection procedures.

WOMEN/CHILDREN AND LABOR MIGRATION
About 49% of the migrant workers in the world are women. However, there is fear of migrant women and children being exploited around the world. For example, Muawantal Chasanah, a Singaporean maid, was abused by her master. During her stint as maid for Ng Hua Chye, she lost 14 kilograms, was beaten by hammers, fists, canes, was burned by boiling water and cigarettes, and died within three years when she was accused of stealing porridge from Ng's daughter and then kicked so unforgivingly that her stomach ruptured.
