BACKGROUND INFORMATION Impact of Migrant Workers Around the World Emily Migration of labor has become an enormous international issue. Migrant workers live and suffer all around the world.In 2005, there were approximately 191 million migrant workers around the world, including 18 million in North America, 9 million in the Middle East, 12 million in South America, 30 million in Europe, and 7 million in Asia. Of these migrant workers, 49% are women.(International Labor Migration).The three main consequences of this movement are firstly, the rise in unemployment rates, secondly the unsubstantial education migrant children recieve and thirdly the discrimination towards migrant workers Migrant workers are contributing to unemployment rates.Billions of other migrants are unable to find jobs, which leads to increases in unemployment rates.New jobs are always being created to help. However, the unemployment rate has yet still increased in the U.S. by 26% in the last 10 years.It has become an enormous issue in the United States.It has become a major concern and problem for families with obligations, debts, and/or medical costs and according to Dr. M. Harvey Brenner, among others, has shown that the unemployment increases so does the crime rate, the suicide rate, and bad health. Today, 31% of migrant children do not recieve a high school diploma
International migration is causing issues and problems for the migrant workers, the host country, and the home country.The immigrants who leave their country are in search of hope, success, and a better future.However, major problems to do with education and discrimination are created.For example, in America according to Richard Alba and Roxane Silberman, “The children of immigrants encounter host-society educational systems.”An example of this is in the U.S. when the Mexicans immigrate.The immigrant’s children and their grandchildren receive very poor and unsubstantial education.For instance, about half of the immigrant parents of Mexican-American school-age children in the 2000 Census did not go beyond the 8th grade. (Hernandez, Denton and McCartney, 2006).Also, according to USA Today only 8% of Americans do not receive a high school diploma. This stat increases to a monstrous 31% in case of migrant workers. In today’s society without a high school diploma or a college degree, people will end up with poor jobs, and usually will not have an opportunity to be successful.These kids could end up like their parents working terrible jobs and receiving poor payment.“Children are the future” if they do not receive the proper education then they can not use their knowledge or share it.If everyone is able to be become more knowledgeable they will be able to help the economy grow in the future.

Discrimination towards migrant workers occurs in a variety of places all over the world.An example of discrimination towards the migrants occurs in Germany.They asked 801 migrants if any of them had ever been discriminated in anyway and everyone said they had been discriminated in some way.They had been discriminated public spaces /institutions’ and includes threats and harassment on the street, public transport, violence, robbery, theft, refused entry to restaurant, pub, club, refused entry to store, bad treatment in restaurants, bad treatment by the police and bad treatment by healthcare.(Lange).Other examples haveto do with the direct environment which include migrants being insulted or harassed at work, bad treatment at school, insults or harassment by neighbours and refused house or apartment (Lange).The third part has to do with work: denied a job, which includes no promotion or getting fired, being exposed to bad treatment by the employment agency (Lange) The fourth and last factor is again rather unambiguous and has to do with income /money migrants are refused credit card use, bad treatment at Social, Insurance Office, and Social services.(Lange).All migrants should be treated fairly because everyone deserves an education and the right to succeed. http://www.stolenchildhood.net/entry/racial-discrimination-practiced-in-british-schools-what-a-shame

Migrant workers are contributing to unemployment rates. Billions of other migrants are unable to find jobs, which leads to increases in unemployment rates. New jobs are always being created to help. Since many people are immigrating the host countries are pressured into creating new jobs. In the end both the host and developing countries are faced with problems. The immigrants’ home country is faced with “brain drain” and the host country is forced to create more jobs, more homes, more food, and more opportunities for the workers. Migration of labor has caused many international concerns and problems. Hopefully, we will be able to work together as a global community to help give migrant workers and immigrants a better life!
